How to start your yoga practice successfully -
by Sophia Paul
Yoga is a discipline that is suited for almost everyone at almost any age to enhance one's health and well-being. It can be anything you want and need, calming, energizing, invigorating, relaxing. Yoga will make you feel better on all levels, physically, emotionally, mentally, even spiritually if you wish. The key to reaping the benefits of yoga is of course proper instruction.
If you are a total novice to yoga it is not advised to start your practice by watching a video or TV show nor by simply 'popping' into any established yoga class. You WILL need a good, experienced, qualified personal instructor who will take the time to address your personal needs with a class that is geared towards beginners. Following this advise your success is almost guaranteed, provided once you started you will keep your practice up.
The reason I am writing this short article is that just recently someone approached me about wanting to 'get into' yoga. Excitedly I told her about all the benefits. A weeks later I talked to her again, she was very disappointed. She had gone to a studio and yes, 'just popped' into a class. She had no idea what the instructor wanted them to do and frustrated gave up.
I invited her to one of my 'Intro to Yoga' classes. It made a world of a difference to her. I covered the basics of yoga philosophy, breathing (pranayama), proper warm up poses; we slowly explored poses from the ground up, step by step and ended the classes with deep relaxation.
As usual all of my students, including my new yogini, were happy and will be continuing their practice; first though a few more intro classes with me, after that they will be able to participate in any established yoga class they choose.
What a difference it makes to pick the right class and have the right instruction based on your ability and needs.
