Is life a gift?
By: Storey
A Buddhist friend of mine told me the other day that he does not believe in gifts because there is no giver and no receiver.... Therefore no gifts are possible so he does not acknowledge it when you give him a gift.

That seems so contrary to what I believe. To me everything is a gift. Yes, sure, whenever you give a gift, you receive one too, so no one can truly give without receiving, but to say there are no gifts? Every day is a gift to me! My body is a gift, the earth, the stars, everything...and I receive them with gratitude. And even though I do give when I receive, and even though its true I receive when I give, I believe in gifts... and most especially gratitude. It seems like saying there are no gifts is making something so complicated and beautiful simple and ugly, like taking all the joy out of life.

I think I must be missing something here, because my friend is a very kind and thoughtful person, but I can't really grasp it.

what do you think? Is life a gift?

I think at times people get to critical with philosophy and thus dissect terminology beyond what is necessary. If you have love in your heart when you 'seemingly' give and 'seemingly' receive then the word gift is irrelevant. It is like the words 'need' vs 'require'. The words make no difference, it is the energy we give them. I consider you requesting friends with me on TruJournal a gift. ;-) I posted the very first journal entry on TruJournal and haven't been on the site in quite a while. You invited me back in the front door. "Inspire and be inspired." This is what TruJournal and Token Rock are all about.

Cheers!

thanks Scott, I see what you mean about "dissecting terminology beyond what is necessary" ... and that is so me anyway. analysis should be my middle name! ha! its so easy to get caught up in the details and lose sight.

I'm glad I was able to help you find your way back here and look forward to reading. This is such a great place to be! TruJournal is such a gift!
